Magnetic Fields in the Chromosphere and Corona
Julia Thalmann (Institute of Physics/IGAM, University of Graz)
Abstract. The solar magnetic field couples the solar interior with the visible surface of the Sun and with its atmosphere. It is also responsible for all solar activity in its numerous manifestations. In addition, the field plays a crucial role in heating the solar chromosphere and corona as well as in accelerating the solar wind. I will review aspects of our current understanding of the role of the magnetic field for the physics of the solar chromosphere and corona, as deduced from direct measurements and/or numerical modeling of the magnetic field.
