Observing Transient and Dynamic Solar Phenomena with the DKIST

Abstract. The 4-m aperture Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) formerly known as the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) is currently under construction on Haleakala (Maui, Hawaii) projected to start operations in 2019. By then the DKIST will be the largest ground-based solar telescope providing unprecedented resolution and photon collecting power. The DKIST will be equipped with a set of first-light instruments offering unique imaging, spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observing opportunities covering the optical to infrared wavelength range. In this presentation we will give an overview of the DKIST’s capabilities and challenges when targeting observations of transient and highly dynamic solar phenomena but also touch on some operational and data handling strategies.
